Yesterday I ended up volunteering to help out at a new American English-language children's library up in the Pushkin government children's library on ul. Mayakovskaya. They needed too volunteers so our director asked the two big guys in our group and since one couldn't, she looked to the few remaining other males. I brought my tutor with me. All I knew was that we were supposed to set up furniture. When we got there, they were just like "Hey! Free slaves!" and had us do whatever they could think of. For some reason there wasn't any light in the building. But's that's off the point. We schlepped boxes of books gifted by the Public Libraries of the Borough of Queens (thanks luckysnorkel and from the citizens of Saint Petersburg, Florida (isn't that cute?) (and thanks to lemur_cat's grandparents). They had to be brought to the library, which is, of course, on the top floor of a building (you guessed it) with no elevator. That's what american volunteers are for! Dima didn't have any trouble because he's an athlete and stuff. I however have become quite unaccustomed to... oh, what is that called? Ah, yes! Physical exertion. Then they have do random other things. When they didn't have a purpose for me while Giant Bill fixed shelves, I started sorting books. I started after the lady asked me what a booked called "Bull Run" is about. I told her history! and then proceeded to grab some books and organize. I think I could organize better than they. I took the job of telling them what is and what is not classic American literature. They spoke English, but heck, I read some of these books when I was a kid! I drooled when I saw a Harry Potter V (american version). The librarian was highly unimpressed by it though. Book V doesn't come out in Russia until Februrary, by the way.
well, that was fun... well, at least interesting.
