Clash of the Cockle Pickers
The word "cockle" is used so often, I'm just so confused.

Thank you, International Herald Tribune.
LONDON Lifeboats and helicopters were mobilized over the weekend to rescue more than 130 stranded shellfish gatherers, most of them Chinese, on the beach in northwest England where 21 Chinese migrants drowned this year, according to the British Coast Guard.

The workers had set out to pick cockles, a shellfish delicacy, when they were cut off by rising tides in Morecambe Bay after two vehicle trailers collided four miles, or more than 6 kilometers, out from the high-tide shoreline on Saturday.

One trailer was carrying 60 Scottish cockle pickers while the second was carrying 76 Chinese pickers, the Maritime and Coast Guard Agency said.

Last February, 21 Chinese cockle pickers died in Morecambe Bay after being trapped by fast-rising tides. Police believe two more people drowned.
