I learned a new word. leiascully posted a link to RateDesi.com and I wanted to know what "desi" means.

desi: terminology.

The term "desi" refers to peoples of South Asian descent˜- yes, combining Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshis, etc, into one big group. It comes from Hindi and literally means "someone who is of the land." If you know anyone from this region, then you also know that this term is now widely used by almost all South Asians. However, it is not the literal meaning they usually refer to, but the slang, westernized definition. A Desi is a displaced South Asian. Perhaps this started just because there wasn't another word for Indians who grew up in America. After all, Columbus already coined the term American-Indian for those citizens who are... well, anything but [seeing as how they lived on the land well-before it was America, and were also far away from India.]

On the more derogatory side, a Desi can be used to describe someone who is "of the land" by blood or heritage only. There are a couple of slang terms, such as ABCD [American-Born Confused Desi], which imply that true Desi-folk are people who look like South Asians-- but walk, talk, breathe, and live American, without any real grasp of the true essence of their culture.
