Dear Andrew:

Thank you for sharing your concerns about the possibility of a
military draft being reinstated.

I appreciate your concerns. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
has stated his opposition to a draft on numerous occasions.
Speculative rumors circulating about a so-called “specialized” draft for
individuals with specific language and technological skills recently prompted
the Department of Defense (DoD) to reiterate firm opposition to any
draft. Numerous studies have shown that a draft would be costly and less
effective than the all-volunteer force upon which the DoD exclusively

Recent attention has highlighted two bills that would reintroduce
a mandatory draft to support the Global War on Terrorism. These bills,
H.R. 163 and S. 89, have been referred to Committee; I do not expect
any further legislative action on them this year.

Is this your senator or something? 'Cause even if HR163 and S89 have more than a snowball's chance in hell of passing, he's sure as hell not going to tell you. You're just the public, you'd try to do something drastic and stupid like not vote for him :P Of course, I'm sure you knew that already, but I just felt like venting. Especially since HR163 includes a provision that makes it nearly impossible to get into Canada for the purposes of avoiding the draft. Damn.

Yep! It's from Frank Lautenberg (frank_lautenberg @ lautenberg.senate.gov), to whom I sent a brief e-mail expressing my concern.
That was nice of him to reply.
I mean, he didn't send it out to constituents and thus inform them, but rather responded to my e-mail which mentioned those bills. He's telling me that he doesn't expect to see them out of committee.
I would vote for Lautenberg if I was registered here in Jersey, instead of Iowa. Lautenberg is the bomb. He's a good senator. Of course, he retired and is only back there because we needed someone good to replace whatshisname who couldn't run again because of some criminal stuff he did or something... So, I don't think he's gonna run again, unless he's needed. It's a shame he can't stay in retirement because good people like him are needed in the senate.
What? That stinking house bill! Leave the refuge of sanity that is Canada alone! I hear Canada is very nice this time of year, by the way.
No draft! No draft!
Lautenberg's e-mail was very nice in calming me with the sensible details of the DoD's current opposition to any draft.
So, yay!

Yeah. I hope this guy is telling the truth. If so, that's good.

yeah! I trust him. He's a smart guy and has been in the Senate a long time.
I wanted you to see it, because you were the one who informed me of this originally.

Thanks. I'm glad. I think this is good news.
